Moving Pictures/Exit Stage Left Dates

May 22, 1981 Philidalphia Signs
Location: The Spectrum, Philadephia, Pennsylvania, USA
Source: Audience (2nd Gen)
Grade: B+
Setlist: Broon's Bane
The Trees
Xanadu
The Spirit of Radio
Red Barchetta
Closer To The Heart
Tom Sawyer

Comments: The only thing keeping this show from an A- is because its an incomplete show, but if it wasn't, it would be amazing. There is a complete source out there, but I don't have it, with completely terrible sound quality, so this might be the best sounding show that we will get from the concert, and its awesome. The sound is very good here, much better than most shows I would say. The fidelity is pretty good, with pretty much all instruments coming in very well, and no dropouts or cuts within the songs (though it is missing most of the show). There is some tape hiss that might get distracting, but other than that it sounds great. The performance is a keeper as well. The boys are definatly in a good mood, from what Im hearing here at least. A must have show for you guys, it sounds completely excellent. Only if your a completeist, you can go after the full show with crappier sound, but otherwise stick to this one.

December 12, 1981 Today's Tom Sawyer
Location: Johnson City, Tennessee, USA
Source: Audience
Grade: B/B+
Setlist: Freewill
Limelight
Prelude Hemispheres
Subdivisions
The Camera Eye
Closer to the Heart
Vital Signs
Working Man
Armageddon
By-tor and the Snowdog

Comments: Another excellent incomplete show. The only thing keeping it from a B+/A- grade is because of two things. The first reason is that is incomplete, but what is here is pretty much fully intact. And two, there is some tape hiss that could be removed. I might even remove the tape hiss myself if I do get some time on my hands. Anyways, what we have here is a decent performance, nothing exactly special happens, but then again nothing really bad happens, from what I am hearing right now. The sound is excellent, save for some of the tape hiss. Everything is very clear, even by todays standards, and even the tape hiss isn't too distracting. I don't hear any signs of distortion overload anywhere, luckily. This show is great, a must have for the larger collection, definatly one to get.

April 19, 1981 Closer to the Magic
Location: Municipal Auditorium, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Source: Audience (2nd Gen)

Vital Signs
Natural Science
Hemispheres: Armageddon
By-Tor and the Snow Dog
In The End
In The Mood
2112 - Grand Finale
La Villa Strangiato

Comments: Another good Moving Pictures show, definatly. I would like to note one thing though, it is incomplete, missing Broon's Bane, The Trees, and Xanadu altogether, and the time disc 2 starts, Red Barchetta is already going on. What is here, though, sounds pretty much really good. It wasn't too distant, and the sound gets noticably better when the show goes on and one, becoming the A- grade it is. The fidelity is slightly lacking, but the tape hiss isn't there, and it sounds really good. The performance is also very good, so make this show a must have and you just might get it!

In the End 1:28
In the Mood 1:34
2112: Grand Finale 3:07
La Villa Strangiato 10:19

Comments: Here is a great source from the Moving Pictures tour, after the filming of what would be Exit...Stage Left VHS/DVD. The sound here is pretty good. Not too distant, and I don't think that I hear any wall echo or any nasty reverb like a few other sources from this tour. There is some tape hiss, not very much though, and there is some distortion when things get really loud, but not distracting at all. This show is pretty much complete, though I think a few seconds of Broon's Bane might be missing, nothing serious. The performance is pretty good here too. The boys are in a good mood to be here, and I think that that they have been here before, so that might add some historical refrence to those who were wondering. The boys do deliver the goods tonight though, with Geddy seeming to be in a spacey mood. A show I wouldn't pass up.

2112: Grand Finale

Comments: I heard that there is a different genneration copy running around that is much worse than this, and this is a second genneration source and it is very good. Its a bit boomy, but the mix is wonderful and everything can be heard really well despite some distortion and booming, but there is one more thing. It has some microgaps, nothing distracting though. A show that I recommend getting if you are looking to deepen you collection of Moving Pictures boots.

February 26, 1981 Moving Chicago
Location: International Ampitheatre, Chicago, Illinois
Source: Audience (4th Gen)
Grade: C-
Setlist: 2112 3:26
Freewill 4:50
Limelight 4:22
Hemispheres Prelude 4:21
Beneath, Between & Behind 2:46
The Camera Eye 11:48
YYZ 7:06
The Trees 5:02
Xanadu 6:18

Comments: Here is the rarest of my sources, and definatly not one of the best sources that I have ever heard. The performance is definatly excellent, luckily. The show is much better than the fourth and last night (Exit...Stage Right, Chicago The Definitive Edition) because they have much more energy and spirit tonight. The sound definatly does not come close to beating it, in fact, this is probably my worst source from the tour. Its very, very distorted at times, like in a little section of Limelight, if i do recall. Its pretty distant, the crowd is very loud as there are some very loud echos and some nasty reverb with this recording. There is some crappy tape hiss that is loud as all hell most of the time, and its pretty annoying. Best left for the collectors.

December 20, 1981 Tempest
Location: Hartford Civic Center, Hartford, Connecticut, USA
Source: Soundboard
Grade: A-
Setlist: 2112: Overture/Temples of Syrinx 6:43
Freewill 6:01
Limelight 4:59
Hemispheres: Prelude 4:20
Beneath, Between, Behind 2:55
Subdivisions 4:54
The Camera Eye 11:05
YYZ / Drum Solo 9:07
Broon's Bane / The Trees 7:33
Xanadu 12:12
The Spirit of Radio 5:32
Red Barchetta 7:01
Closer to the Heart 3:16
Tom Sawyer 4:53
Vital Signs 5:08
Working Man / Hemispheres: Armageddon / Bytor & the Snow Dog / In the End / In the Mood / 2112: Finale 11:55
La Villa Strangiato 9:27

Comments: Well, not as good as Permanent Pictures, the sound quality is much brighter than Moving Pictures story. The sound is muffled for most of the show, but its not as bad as it was for the first 20 minutes. This seems to be a genned source as it has some tape hiss, nothing too distracting, and there is some distortion in places that can getting annoying if you are listening very loud, so you might want to listen a little quieter than you normally would with a bott, but not to detract from this good sounding show. The performance, as I have said before, is pretty good, but nothing too special is going on, but a very nice and tight version of Subdivisions is played tonight, but nothing else seems to be as good as that song tonight. This show is more or so for the collectors, but I would get Permanent Pictures before this.

Closer To The Heart 3:24
Tom Sawyer 5:14
Vital Signs 4:59
Medley / Working Man / Armageddon / By-Tor and the Snow Dog / 12:09
La Villa Strangiato 10:13

Comments: Here is a good show from the first night in the Wembly Arena in London, England, and this show does not dissapoint. The sound is pretty good, everything is heard well, but its a bit distant, some tape hiss, and a little bit of compression in places. This is good when it comes to the Exit...Stage Left tour, slightly behind Deeside, and way behind Brighton, Hamburg, and Hartford, but beats some other shows from the tour. The performance is completely excellent, one of the best. The performance is only compared to Deeside in overall performance, as this is slightly in second place for performance, but great. This is a good show that the collectors and the die-hard Rush fans should definatly get.

By-Tor & The Snow Dog 4:06
In The End 1:43
In The Mood 1:34
2112: Grand Finale 2:33
La Villa Strangiato 9:37

Comments: If this were complete, it would be one of the best shows out there. This show easily beats MSG, Providence, and Fort Worth soundwise, but the performance is definatly one that you have to remember. The performance is excellent, they were in great form tonight. Its really funny, when some guy was lighting firecrackers in the place, after Red Barchetta, Geddy calls it a dangerous and stupid act, so that is worth getting just for that. The sound here is nothing short of excellent. The mix is perfect, the bass and guitar sound so excellent, and the drums and vocals cut through with authority. The only thing I wish for is that the keyboards where a little more there, but its well heard. There is some occasional distortion in places, as it may have been recorded too high, but the sound is amazing. 2112, Freewill, Parts of YYZ and The Trees are missing. Working Man, and Hemispheres are missing from the encore. Awesome show that you have to get.

Bytor and the Snow Dog 4:04
In the End 1:43
In the Mood 1:34
2112: Finale 2:13
La Villa Strangiato 9:21

Comments: This is not the best version of the show, as this show is a little more genned than the other version of the show that I do have. The sound is great, the fidelity is definatly a standout here. There is some tape hiss and occasional distortion (extremely rare) because the master tapes must have been poorly handled. Everything sounds great here, and the mix is defiantly exceptional. The performance is easily better than Chicago as it was more spirited. They mess up alot, but its all good as they are in an outstanding mood tonight. A good show for the collectors and those people.

Working Man,Hemishperes:Armageddon,By-Tor and the Snow Dog,In the End,In the Mood, 2112:Grand Finale 13:08
La Villa Strangiato 9:59

Comments: The only thing holding this back is the sound. The performance is easily one of the best from the tour. I never knew Rush liked Bloomington, and now I might add that location as one of Rush's favorite places to play. The sound isn't bad, but its not great, unfortunatly. Its very distant, and there is some echo. There isn't too much distortion or tape hiss as I do think that this is the analog master cassette recording, but I could never be too sure of that. Everything can be heard pretty well at times, but its kind of hard to hear things sometimes in the recording. The audience is loud after tracks, but they are silent between. A good show for the collectors and die-hard fans who love Rush alot.

La Villa Strangiato 10:22

Comments: If you though Exit...Stage Right was great, you had something wrong with your ears for a moment. This is soundboard quality, with a much better and brighter mix than Exit...Stage Left. The main thing I like about this one is that it dosen't sound old or generated like Exit...Stage Right does, and it has a much clearer perception of the band. The performance, well, I can say many things about it, none of them are really too flattering. Given it was their fourth and final night in Chicago, the performance can be forgiven. It lacked punch, and the intro to La Villa Strangiato by Geddy is hilarious, he sounds like he is competely wasted on the stage! Ah, and awesome show that is to bet, only tied with the Anahiem show for soundboard quality. But I do think that the Anahiem show has a much better performance, this show is a must-have to any collection, and if you don't have it, get it from me!

May 24, 1981 Short Takes
Location: Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island, USA
Source: Audience

YYZ / Drum Solo 8:53
Broons Bane 1:43
The Trees 4:43
Xanadu 13:14
The Spirit Of Radio 5:42

Comments: Here is the incomplete Providence show, which is very good sounding for its time, which is great. I don't think that it sounds as good as the full show, but its more or so in the middle pack of all the Moving Pictures and Exit...StageLeft shows. Granted, its a bit distant, but I don't think that it is as distant as the full show. There is more tape hiss, suggestion a second or even a third generation copy. The performance is amazing. Victorias Day is the day to go see Rush live where ever the band may be, but the performance is definatly blistering, which you can hear the full performance on Streets of Diversity, the full Providence show. A great show, it will make its way into your collection sometime.

Comments: Here is a definatly excellent, and complete show from the Moving Pictures / Exit...Stage Left tour. The sound here is amazing. There are times where it is a tad muffled, like Red Barchetta, but the overall sound quality is excellent. There isn't as much fidelity as the Chicago or Anahiem shows, but it beats the Providence and MSG by a longshot. There is an amazing amount of clariy, and the bass and highs work perfectly together. There isn't too much distance, but there is some crowd noise, nothing distracting though. There are only 2 cuts, but this is an otherwise complete show. The performance is flat. I will not pull any punches, its just not their best performance from the 3 night stand. A must have show.

Interview / The Spirit of Radio 10:28

Comments: This dosen't suprise me at all. Another rushed production from the fan label I-vent, and that is not a pun at all. The sound here could be much better, its very distorted and distant, and much more genned than the Breaking Sound Barriers bootleg from this same very show. The only good thing here is the performance, which I can definatly talk more about in my more positive review of the Breaking Sound Barriers boot. There is an extra to this very odd release, however. The intereview is in decent quality, which is very good too say the least, but it really ins't anything that would make this a great bootleg in terms of quality. A must have for the collectors, but everyone else can stay away from this shameful show.

2112: Finale 2:36
La Villa Strangiato 11:43

Comments: Another very great Moving Pictures/Exit...Stage Left tour show. The performance here is definatly a standout. While not as good as the Deeside show a few weeks earlier, I do think that it crushes the Hartford show in terms of performance, as today they are very energetic and amazingly on cue tonight. The sound here is actually very good, which I never would have thought with some generation lost on this recording. Granted, it is a bit distant, but I do think that the overall sound of the band is excellent. There is decent bass and mids here, but I think that the high end is a tad lacking, but I do think that this show is definatly clear enough that you can make out what each bad member is doing. The audience here isn't too loud in-between tracks, but after and before they are crazy, and the audience in the Drum Solo for Neil are just wild, but I think that the audience was removed from the Drum Solo for a reason, as I think that Digital Dan stated before that they were too loud and he individualy cut them out without losing the musical signal, and I definatly would think that it is much improved. There is some slight tape hiss here as it is more genned than a regular release, but I do think that the overall clarity is great. This is a very nice show from the later parts of the Moving Pictures/Exit Stage left tour, a must have basically.

La Villa Strangiato 9:33

Comments: A definate upgrade to Moving Pictures Story, as this is definatly much less muddy and much more clear. This sounds much less stale as the other bootleg I mentioned as well. There is some slight tape hiss with this recording, but nothing that would detract from the overall sound, as everything is very clear. I do think that this is a soundboard recording because of the distance with the crowd, either that or it was recorded on the stage, I don't know which one. Everything is much clearer and much more defined than in Moving Pictures story, and this oen has much more overall clarity. The performance is pretty good, but nothing really special is going on, so I definatly cannot say that this show is as good as the Deeside stop or the Brighton stop in the performance, but the sound is better than most shows from this tour. The crowd went wild when Geddy said "This is Tom Saywer" and it was really amazing, the crowd was definatly digging the show tonight, they were just having so much fun all night. This is definatly one of the best Moving Pictures/Exit...Stage Left shows out there. A must have recording.

Comments: I would say that this show is essential, but it is so compressed so it cannot happen. If there were less compression, this would be a great show. The performance here is okay, but I don't think that anything is really going on tonight, so I would have to say that this is a pass on the performance side, because there are definatly better performances out there. The instruments sound great, but the recording is so compressed. Its not muffled, its really boxed in, if you can understand my point of view. Its sounds like the band is in a tin can, if you will. But, for the rarity of the recording, I think that this is a great find for all of the completists, but not bad in the long run, but falls short of excellent because of the compression.

In The Mood / The Grande Finale 3:40

Comments: This is simply the audio from the Exit...Stage Left DVD show, which is to say amazing. The recording is clean and very clear, but lacks the definition of the other boots from this very same date. It overall lacks in the upper frequencies but I think that this boot does get the job done in some sense of fashion. The performance is definatly excellent, that is why the band decided the tape this show on DVD! A must have, of course.

In The Mood / The Grande Finale 3:40

Comments: This boot is better than the Red Barchetta boot from the same show because the definition from this boot is superior to that show. The performance, as I have said before, is excellent, that is why the band decided to video tape this show. Alex is having the most fun, as you can tell on the video, with Neil and Geddy taking a little more serious action in the concert and staying more on focus with the overall performance than Alex is. This is an excellent show that should make it into everyones collection sometime.

Comments: The sound on all of these are par, with the 2nd and 3rd night sounding the best, because of the postition maybe? But, all of the performances tell a different story. The 1st night has the absolute best performance out of all of these shows, with okay sound, but not the best from the boxset. The 1st night still has good sound, though. The 2nd night has great sound, easily the best sounding out of the boxset, but the performance is a totally different story. The boys were really flat and boring tonight, sad to say. Everything is just so dull, and boring with that unfortunate performance on the second night. The 3rd night is a mixed bag. The sound isn't as good as the 2nd night, but has great sound, easliy better than the 1st night. The performance is a definate mixed bag, because they are much better tonight, but they don't offer the goods, because some flips and flubs occur many times. This is a great little boxset. I will only trade all of the shows for you, and in exchange I pick 2 shows from you. There is no "I only want the 2nd night" or "I only want the 1st and 3rd night" you get everything. Great boxset that should walk into everyones collection eventually.

Comments: An okay little show here. Its definatly not one of the best sources from the whole tour, but maybe in the middle section. The performance here is okay, but not as good as the second night. The sound here is a little bit of everything, much like Picture This, but this source isn't as good. The sound here is everywhere, compressed to not compressed, distortion to distortion free at times, and crappy to pretty damn good, and pretty damn good to pretty damn shitty. I think this would be rated higher if there was a better performance, and less cuts, but otherwise this show is a keeper for some parts in the sound. There is some constant echo here, and there is an everlasting lack of resolution with the overall sound. This is more for the seasoned collector, but I think its a good little show.

Comments: A good little show we have here, much better than the first night, performance-wise its much better. The sound here is a mixed bag, at times better than rated, and times its worse than rated because of some compression at times, but a fine source. This is also in the middle section of all of the Moving Pictures shows, but this is a little higher than the first night. Now, lets talk about this amazing performance that we happen to get here. The performance here is definatly excellent, with much more power and authority than the first night, as it was flat and a tiny bit boring at times. This is a show that is amazing because of the performance, but the sound is something you could pass up on, but it will make it into your collection of Rush shows one day.

Comments: This thing is like a tale of two recordings. On one side, the recording is clear, and beautiful, mostly in disc 1 and some (but not alot) parts of disc 2. Then, there is the evil side. Compressed, and unattractive on most of disc 2. The performance here is amazing, they give a great show to the New York crowd. They do a cool little ditty in the beginning of "Limelight" but the sound isn't up to par for disc 2. The sound on disc 1 is almost brittle, but I would describe it to be detailed. The disc 1 is excellent, the mix is very good. There is little distance with the band and the taper, so its a very clear reception of the band. Luckily, we don't get to much tape hiss on either of the recordings, making them (well disc 2) sound just okay. More for the seasoned collector, for people who were at the show more than casual collectors. Disc 1 is a must have though, so just listen to that one!

Comments: Not the best source from the whole tour, but a better one, at that. The sound isn't excellent, but good. There is some distance with the band, and there is a little distortion, but what saves this show with suprise you. The show itself, the performance, is excellent. There is no way that any other show beats this in terms of its performance, they sound so great tonight, and they really have this energy that is really amazing. Though the sound isn't great, but listenable, this is a show you don't want to miss.

Comments: The absolute best source I have found from the Moving Pictures/Exit...Stage Left tour, this has got it all. The performance is stellar, but not as good as the one from the European Holiday, but still great. This bootleg also has incredible sound, with only some dull areas, but most of it is incredible. There are, as many may say, flubs with the overall performance, and I do asure you, the are doing their best, and they come out really great. One problem with the recording, keeping it from being a straight A+ is that there is a 40 second loud hissing sound in the beginning of 2112, the beginning of the concert pretty much, but if you fast forward, it will get done easliy. It dosen't last long, and it goes right into the song, then it sounds excellent. A must have for everyone.

Comments: This is probably one of the better sounding sources from the whole tour, and the performance is near perfect. They put on a great show tonight, with little to no flubs with the whole performance. The crowd is really into the show, screaming when they can, but not too loud that you can't hear the amazing sound and amazing performance. The sound quality is excellent, but there is some slight compression, but overall a great sounding show. The 1st gen taper was bought right after the show was recorded, so we know that this is a 1st gen source, and its definatly a great one. I'm listening to this show as I speak, and I really don't think that there is any audience noise that is really bad, its actually very entertaining to hear every little fan scream when they can, and its really just such an interesting show when you listen to it. Without saying, I can recommend this really great show to all of you Rush lovers.

Comments: Definatly tied with the Chicago show as the definitive Moving Pictures show, and not alot come close, except for Streets of Diversity comeing in a very close second place in terms of sound quality. The only reason I didn't give this an A+ is because there are many flaws with the performance, technically, but it really adds to how funny the show, ultimatly is. The band played well, but the equpiment on the keyboards fail in The Spirit of the Radio, but there a few flaws with the acutal band performance, but not bad enough to bring it down to an A- or a B+. One thing I may also mention is that there might not be any songs from this show that might have made it to Exit...Stage Left, but none-the-less a great show. Something you definatly don't want to miss.

Comments: There really is nothing to complain about here. The sound is really good, sometimes I really think i'm listening to a high gen soundboard, but its really a great listen. The instruments are heard very clearly. This is also a very rare find, because, for many years, you have only gotten a partial concert (about 4-5 songs) but now, we get the whole thing, and it sounds darn good. It might not be as great Exit...Stage Right, but its pretty close. There is some distance with the recording, as there is a good amount of crowd noise and there is some tape hiss as this is an older source (2nd generation to be exact) but the echo in this show helps it, giving more detail when Neil hits the drums. The performance is definatly excellent, as they enjoy themselevs on Victorias Day, but their not in Canada. Very odd that they aren't in Canada really. There aren't very many cuts, either, which is great. Actually this show is complete from start to finish. Very nice, something you don't want to miss.

Comments: This is along the lines of being okay and being subpar. There is, ultimatly, more bad than good, but I still managed to give it a B because the performance overall was pretty good. The bad is that there is a great deal of overall echoe, and the crowd was very wild on that night, so the band is barely heard by the taper, so, thus giving you the echoe and the crowd noise (obviously). Another really bad problem is that it sound really compressed, like its in a box that can't produce depth in sound. The good is the overall performance was blistering, and its a really rare show, I think that this is really the only source of the show. I can't really recommend this because the audio is a little harsh and hard to listen too, so I can only recommend this to collectors, diehards, and hardcore bootlegers.

Comments: This show is great, I will start off with that. The performance here is definatly great, we get amazing versions of "Subdvisions" and a passionate, yet rough "Red Barchetta." Geddy is in a great mood tonight, as he sounds very good. The taper actually cut all of Geddy's talking and all of the audience noise from the production, and it was done at the show! Digital Dan at Digital Rush Experience stated it was done at the show, so its like a 1.4 hour meledy, which isn't to detract from the overall sound. The sound here is excellent. Its on tie with the Brighton show and beats the Deeside, Hartford (Moving Pictures story), and the Providence show from the massive 1981 tour. The highs here are very amazingly captured, but at times they are a bit harsh, but nothing that would detract from the awesome sound. The mix here is perfect, with everything sounding great, but the guitar I think is most picked up. Alex's side of the concert hall. A must have show, this thing is all around amazing!

Comments: The review that I had posted before was, to say the least, very inacurate, to say the least. Only really the first 20 minutes are muffled and not par, so to speak. Then things start to get really good after those 20 minutes, just in time for the pre-released version of "Subdivisions" which sounds partiularly great on that night. The performances was okay, to say the least, nothing really to special. I think that the boys really just saw this place as another stop on the road, but they sound pretty good tonight. After a few songs, the sound really improves, which boosts the great mostly to a B or B+ with more areas on the second disc that are really good, mostly an A- grade, with only a few B or B+ grades in the mix. If you a Moving Pictures fan, you'll like this one.

Comments: This is one of the better audience recordings I have found out there. The sound is nice and full, and straight-forward, in your face sound. Geddy's vocals were really nice on that night, and Alex was just playing amazingly as he always does. This really sounds like a great soundboard. This is high generation as it does sound a bit old and lacks in overall detail. The performance was also pertty nice, with some nice added intros and whatnot. The surf version of "Working Man" and many other songs are really great treat for those who like when Rush does different musical styles. The performance, is well, a little dull, won't say anymore of that. Really, a great addition to you collection overall. I highly recommend this one to anyone.

Comments: In the middle pack of these very few shows. The sound is okay, but I think that the performance is much better than the sound itself, which definatly bosts the grade up for this one in many cases. I think it isn't as good as the Something Old, and Something New bootleg, but I think it definatly gets the job done. You can sense that the band is really happy to show everyone in the crowd the new material, and it really shows with the performance exactly how they feel. This show is more for completists because the sound is a little sub-par, to say the least, but this definatly not a bad recording by any means.

Comments: Yikes, I didn't realize how bad it really was until I got it. The sound here is dreadful, even worse than the 8/14/74 show, which isn't even this bad! The sound is so distorted, chopped up, and there is just so much distance and so much audience noise, its really a hard song to overall listen to. The reason i didn't give this an F grade is because the performance is here is spectacular, which really saves the show in terms of overal production. The band gives very nice versions of songs like "A Passage to Bangkok" and "La Villa Strangiato" which are really firey tonight, but the sound, unfortuantly, is very bad, and it makes it almost unlistenable because of the overall sound. But, its not completely unlistenable because of the amazing preformance. This is really something more for the seasoned collector, and definatly not for the casual trader, they will definatly hate this release.

Comments: This has to be one of my all time favorite shows. The pre-released versions of "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" are really nice treats. The band was on fire that night as well. Another highlight was a preformance of "A passage to Bangkok" which Rush rarely played back in the 1970's, so that is a real treat as well. The sound is really impressive considering how old it it, nearly 28 years old! One thing that I really don't care for about this bootleg is "The Spirit of Radio", thats really the only problem. The recorder had some speed problems, there are parts were its too fast, or too slow, and some that are right, but thats the only recroding problem. This is still a really good bootleg, despite the speeding problems. I strongly recommend this, for its really impressive quality, and the rare songs that are on this bootleg.

Comments: Here is a pretty okay show from the European half of the Permanent Waves tour, and a decent one we do happen to get. There is some hiss, suggesting an older source, but everything is very clear, but there seems to be some tape drag, and speed problems through most of the show, nothing distracting. Still, the best European shows from the Permanent Waves tour are On the Bar and Big Ben, though this might just be under, as it certainly does beat the first night and the fourth night at the Hammersmith Odeon. The performance is pretty good, nothing too special, but very good. The boys are a little unexciting, but that turns in a very solid and very focused show. One that you should get after you get the best shows from this awesome tour.

Comments: The main reason I got this show is because its supposed to be rare, and with good reason aparently. The performance is pretty good, nothing special though. The sound is good for its era, not distant, but some distortion and bad mix make it a less then average sounding show at sometimes, but still very good for its era considering that there are millions of terrible Permanent Waves shows out there that I do not yet have, this is in the middle pack of all of the Permanent Waves shows though. This is incomplete, as there are numerous cuts, not too many distracting luckily, but we miss everything after Hemispheres. A show for the collectors.

They totally rock tonight, and it really shows. The sound really dosen't rock though. Distortion everywhere, millions of cuts, compression, and alot of tape flucuations and speed problems make this seem really unpleasent at times. You can hear things at times, but not always clearly. The best of the Hammersmith shows are The Big Ben and On the Bar, and this show does not beat it. A die-hard show.

Grade: C/C-
Setlist: 2112 Overture
2112 Temples of Syrinx
2112 Presentation
2112 Grand Finale
Freewill
Natural Science
A Passage to Bangkok

Comments: Another incomplete show, but one of the rarest. I think that the same taper taped the first night and this night, as these shows are both master recordings. The performance is okay, not the best from this 5 night stand at the Hammersmith, but not the worst overall performance from any show of the tour (that reward can go to several other shows that I will not mention). The sound is probably the worst thing about this show though. Distortion and speed problems make this bad enough, but poor resolution and some echo add to how unpleasent this show sounds at times. There are times when thing shine though, very rarely though. A show more or so for the crazy collectors.

Comments: Here is one of the rarest shows from the Permanent Waves tour, but it has good reasons to be rare. Its the first night in Montreal, which is rare enough. This is not better than the second night sonically and soundwise, but the performance is better I think. Both performances are very strong fortunatly. The sound, distant and a little distorted, but it is very much listenable. Geddy is in a fine mood tonight. We get a very blistering version of Bangkok, which is always nice to hear. With this release, there are many cuts. 2112 overture is missing complete, 2112 Grand Finale is missing, and the first few seconds of Freewill are missing. The intro the Xanadu is missing, and some of Natural Science is missing. A verse is cut on Bangkok, and most of The Trees is missing. All of Cygnus X-1 and Hemispheres are gone, and some of Closer to the Heart has a cut in the beginning. This is missing most of the encore, and the beginning to La Villa is cut, and there is a very large tape flucuation spot at the end were the speed runs to fast, then too slow and the last 10 or 20 seconds of La Villa is also cut. A must have for the hardcore collector.

Comments: Another awesome show from this tour. It does not beat Fort Worth or the remastered version of the second night in Hammersmith, but its right under those for best audience recordings. The first 30 minutes or so are muffled, but aren't bad, so the show starts about at B+ area. By Natural Science the grade is an easy A, but I averaged those out, and made A- so it gets a bit better as the show goes on. The speed starts off slow on the first disc, but seems to clear up on the second disc. The sound overall is very good, very detailed, and there is about no distance between the recorder and the stage, as everything is clear, but the clarity isn't as strong as some other shows. A show you need to have in your collection.

Comments: Too bad this is incomplete and dosen't sound as good as some of the other shows, because the performance here is actually very nice. The sound is by no means terrible, but it is very muffled and very distant, with alot of taper talk. This is incomplete, loosing every single second of the remaining songs from the normal setlist, unfortuantly. Thats really bad because they seem to be giving one of the strongest performances of the tour. Geddy is really in a good mood tonight, and just playing really well. Alex seems fairly spirited, and Neil seems to be playing pretty well tonight. I think with all of the positives aside, this show is really only for the collectors, because of the rarity, I cannot recommend this to the casual trader.

Comments: I really like this show, and its a great Permanent Waves show on a whole. This source, unfortunatly, is incomplete, so evey song after Jacobs Ladder is missing from the show. But, this source sure does sound better than most of the European shows. There is some distortion, but the sound is huge, and the drums sound quiet good on this recording. There is a bit of taper talk here and there, but I don't think its all that bad. This show, on my standards, ties with Big Ben, but dosen't come close to shows like On the Bar or Timeless Wavelength Platinum Edition, but more or so of Setting the Course, or Distant Overture, so i think that this show is pretty damn good. A must have for the Permanent Waves lover.

Comments: A great near complete show! The sound here is pretty huge, much like the Freedom of Music boot, but this one is a tad more distant than the other, as there is a little more taper talk than the boot mentioned above. But, I think that the best thing about it is the warm bass sound, its pretty strong, but luckily never overwhelming so. The show is pretty good sounding on high volumnes, so you will get complete satifactory if you listen loudly. There are a few cuts, but the worst one happens to be in La Villa. Only the intro is here, but what is here is pretty good. The performance seems to be par for the course, but definatly not the strongest, and definatly not the weakest performance. This is one of the best sources from the tour, and I love this show, so I really have to recommend this to anyone.

Comments: Before I rant on and on about how great some Permanent Waves shows are, I would like for you to know this is the exact copy of The Three Magicians regular copy. The sound is exactly the same, which is buried in hiss but the overall production is pretty good. I do have the definative version of the show, Timeless Wavelength Platinum Edition now, and I do think that one is a definate improvement over the two magician boots. I am bitterly dissapointed with the production this because its already made.

Comments: Another excellent show from the Permanent Waves tour, and this is definatly a must have because it is one of the more rare from the whole tour. The sound is okay, its a little distant, but it is bright and there isn't too much distance or distortion that would make this an unenjoyable production. Geddy can get a bit buried in the mix at times, but I think that the mix as a whole is very good, with Alex sounding great as usual. The audience seems to be in a good mood tonight, as Geddy is as well. The performance is a hell of alot better than the 2 nights previous (03-19-80) because they seem to be much more energetic and much less flat than the previous 2 nights. This is incomplete, with 90 seconds gone of Cygnus X-1 and Hemispheres, and most of the drum solo is gone, and La Villa being cut completely. Even if this is incomplete, it is definatly a must have Permanent Waves show.

Comments: One of the best sounding shows to emerge from the Permanent Waves tour, rivaling the known soundboards in quality (well at least the 1-26-80 show is definatly beaten). The setlist here is definatly amazing, you get all of the epics and all of the hits to stable it all out. The epics are definatly shortened, but they give much more quantity than any other tour besides the "Hemispheres" tour a year or two before. The performance here is definatly excellent here as well, with amazing performances of "2112" "A Passage to Bangkok" "Hemispheres" and "La Villa Strangiato" to name just a few of the amazing songs that are played. There are the regular releases, The Three Magicians and the remastered edition, but they definatly don't match the quality of this amazing boot. The sound quality alone is outstanding, with only a little tape hiss that somewhat distracts you, but the overall music is so much more incredible. The mix is so amazing here as well, with the guitar and bass sounding incredible. The drums are a tad low in the mix, but I do think that its not too low in the mix. There is little to no distance here as well, which definatly makes this the whole show too beat. One of the best from this tour, only rivaled by Distant Overture and On the Bar in overall sound quality, but they don't beat this amazing show because of the amazing performance here and the impressive sound quality. You have to get this amazing show, because you definatly will not be dissapointed with this fantastic recording.

Comments: The only reason to get this is because of the rarity, and the great performance. The sound here says otherwise to the statement though. While the performance may be excellent, they were playing really well tonight, the sound is almost unlistenable. There is so much distance with the band, but the audience on a whole isn't too loud at all. There is tape hiss which really detracts more than adds more than anything else, and there is just so much distortion that I don't really know where to start from. I think with all of the distance and distortion cleared up, this would be a great little recording here because of the rarity and the performance, but the sound is just absolutly dreadful, but not completely unlistenable. There is some clear moments, but not too many that would make this an enjoyable recording. The only reason to get this is because of the rare venue and such, and because the performance is excellent, casual collectors will hate this recording with a passion.

Comments: This Permanent Waves show is one of the much more enjoyable shows from the whole tour, with an okay sound and good performance to match. There is a more enjoyable sound range than that of Generations lost, but dosen't come close to Montreal or the Oden shows, but its nice to have because its here. There is some tape hiss, mid-range distortion, and some distance with the overall band, but this is still enjoyable. The performance here is decent, with a blistering version of "Hemispheres" and a few other songs, but there alot better performances because most of it is very flat. The Radio Promo is a tiny bonus that really isn't to bad nor good to have in your collection. I think this is in the middle section of all of the Permanent Waves shows, but this is still a great recording that you might listen to for a long time.

Comments: Another great, scratch that, another excellent U.K. Rush bootleg, which is really rare to find. Many of the U.K./Europe shows sound terrible, to say the least. On the Bar and The Big Ben sound fantastic compared to the rest of the shows, and they both sound great for Permanent Waves shows as well. The sound here is nothing short of a miracle, not to distant, and not to bad sounding at all. The performance here is definatly better than Big Ben, they give a better show, so to speak of. Either the band is really sounding good tonight, playing really uptempo and fast, or there is a speed problem. Nothing really to dramatic. There is no tape hiss, but there might be a little distance, but the crowd seems to be quiet for the most part. I think that this is definatly in the better section of the Permanent Waves shows, along with The Big Ben, Setting the Course, and Distant Overture. Only available in SHN format. A must have.

Comments: Probably the best sounding complete show from the Permanent Waves shows, but the 2/14/80 show is so much better sound-wise. This is the 3rd night of the tour, so you can expect some flubs with the performance, but overall very good performance. The sound quality here is also excellent, but there are some problems that may get a little distracting at times. There is some tape hiss, but nothing extremely noticable, but still definatly there. There is, also, some bass distortion, because there might have been a problem with Geddy's moniter tonight. The mix is exceptional. Geddy is a little low in the mix, but he can be heard pretty well. The guitar is captured and well represented with this recording, as with Neil's drumming skills here. There are some tape eats that can be heard, but none of them lasting more than one second, and none of the overall music is actually gone, so we luckily get a virtually complete show here. "The Spirit of Radio" "Natural Science" and "A Passage to Bangkok" sound a tiny bit compressed here, but I think its still a great show. There are also little clicks in the recording that happen every so often, but none are very serious. Definatly one of the best from this tour.

Comments: This is definatly one of the best sounding UK shows out there. There are really, and I mean really bad ones out there, and this one really sounds great compared to the other ones. The sound is very good, a little thin, and sometimes audience is a little loud, but it really sounds good. The performance is good, but there are some better performances out there, but this one is much, and I mean much more listenable. I don't know if this is a 1st gen or a 2nd gen source, but it sounds pretty damn good if its any of the sources. There is some tape hiss suggesting that this might be a second generation source, but I really don't care because the sound here is definatly an excellent find for any collector or any casual rush lover at that. There is also some distortion in places, and the overall sound is a tad mushy. I really recommend this.

Comments: This is definatly not a bad show, but its definatly not the greatest. The sound is pretty good, nothing to complain about except for some distortion that can get a little out of hand and somewhat annoying after a while. There are also little specks of sound, I would call them, that come up in the show with the taper. The performance isn't top-notch or anything, but its okay. I think they just saw it as a standard for the tour, and not something important like the 02-14-1980 show, which was a great performance. But, all in all, there is really nothing to be mad about with this bootleg, but its just a little off from being the best.

Location: Birmingham Odeon, Birmingham, England
Source: Audience (Analog 3rd Gen Cassette Master)
Grade: C

Comments: The only reason to get this is because its a rare source, but its definatly not worth picking up for the sound. There is a great deal of overall high end and low end distortion, and there is a very large amount of audience noise, but at least you know the performance was great. The sound is also very muffled, as you will. The band is barely even heard for the first few songs. But after about 10 songs (I can't recall any of the songs played, being that I have only listened to it for at least only one time) it starts to get a little better, as you can hear Geddy's voice and the guitar break into the mix. The drums are very lost in the mix, as I listened, so its not so drum heavy, which means the drum solo is bearly heard. Not a Permenant Waves bootleg that I would pick up at first sight, only for people who need everything.

Comments: This is the second best version of this show that I own. The sound is much better than The Spirit of St. Louis. The sound is much fuller, and has more depth. The only reason that this isn't the best one is that it has a little bit of a muffled sound at the beginning, but starts to fade away when the guitar in Overture start. And, as I have said before, the performance for this date is definatly excellent. Overall, a must-have.

Comments: There is a better version of this show, called Timeless Wavelength- Platinum Edition I am looking for that boot this I just stated, if you may like a trade, e-mail me (now I have it, check above reviews). Overall, this has a solid sound, and the selist is really great, with only B,B&B cut, but it has a good fade in effect. There is a good amount of distortion in the low end, if you listen closely enough, you will get a good hear of it, but it won't be all that great, to say the least. I think I should talk about the performance. This thing has an excellent show, they really sound like their giving it their all tonight, as Geddy sings really nice tonight, and the taper really captures it, but definatly, in no way perfectly. You should get this if your a collector.

Comments: In my mind, this is the definitive Permenant Waves bootleg. The sound is almost perfect, it litterally sounds like it was really released. The only bad thing about this show is that its incomplete, but every February 14, 1980 show is incomplete, but this one is the best sounding. The band also had a pretty strong performance as well, so thats great to capture a great performance. There is virtually no distortion what-so-ever with this recording, that is really why it sounds so good. "Xanadu" sounds really good, for the record. Overall, you have to get it!!!

Comments: I don't care for this one because its a little short. Though it is a soundboard, it really sounds like a second gen audience recording, but definatly not a really bad one. The sound is actually very distant, being that it is a board, but then after a few songs the sound is okay, but its a little muffled and it has some hiss. The instruments come in fine, but its a little bit of a boring performance. I don't think that they really sounded to good tonight, so I really don't think this thing should of even been recorded. I only recommend this to people who like boring shows.

Comments: This is one of the many sources of the St. Louis 2 14 80 show. This is the only one of the only ones that I have found, and this is all I really need, until I got the Remastered edition, which the review is above. The sound is pretty nice, full, and Rush was very energetic that night. But this one is lacking the punch of some of the other shows from this date that the other ones seem to have, but this one leaves out. I think this is still a great little recording here, but not perfect be any means. The performance here is excellent, as described with all the other recordings of this show that I have. This one, as I have said before, lacks punch. I highly recommend this one to anyone.
